We often think of choreography as rigid—a carefully designed sequence of steps leading to a predetermined result. But in reality, the most dynamic, unforgettable performances emerge from a balance of structure and spontaneity.
I first learned this while working with the renowned choreographer Ralph Lemon. He never entered the studio with a fixed plan for a piece. Instead, he started with a spark of inspiration—an idea, a feeling, even a quote from All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy. Then came the experimentation: playing with movements, exploring possibilities, adjusting and adapting to what felt right in the moment. The final masterpiece was never what we expected at the start, but it was always something extraordinary.
Careers often work the same way. Success isn’t about perfectly executing a 5, 10, or 15-year plan. It’s about moving with intention toward what could be while staying open to opportunities—trying new roles, shifting course when needed, and embracing the unexpected.
When vision meets improvisation, we find flow: that sweet spot where intention and instinct come together.
I never would have ended up where I am today if I hadn’t been willing to take risks and follow my gut along the way.
Three Steps You Can Take:
Start with a Vision, Not a Fixed Plan – Just like a choreographer begins with an idea rather than a set routine, approach your career with a guiding vision instead of a rigid step-by-step plan. Stay open to where the journey might take you.
Embrace Experimentation and Pivot When Needed – Growth can come from exploring new challenges, skills, and industries. Be willing to test, learn, and put yourself out there—sometimes the best opportunities come from unexpected places.
Find Your Flow Through Adaptation – Careers aren’t built in straight lines. Pay attention to what energizes you, refine your direction as you go, and trust that you’ll find your flow and rhythm through the combination of intention and flexibility.
✴️ So, what’s your vision? And where might a little improvisation take you next?
