What does it take to lead one of the world’s greatest ballet companies—and reimagine its future at the same time? On this Giving Tuesday, I’m excited to share Episode 4 of The Leadership Dance podcast, featuring Susan Jaffe, Artistic Director of American Ballet Theatre (ABT).
“Discovered” by Mikhail Baryshnikov at the age of 18, Susan Jaffe became an overnight sensation and was a principal dancer with ABT for 22 years. In our conversation, she opens up about the struggles she faced in becoming an international ballet star at a young age, how she overcame imposter syndrome, and why she believes that grit, courage, and risk taking are essential qualities that all dancers have.
“I didn't feel like I could live in the Susan Jaffe shoes that everybody was talking about. And I had a lot of feeling like I was a poser, like I was a fraud, you know, living this life of Susan Jaffe, but I was not feeling strong or confident enough to be that person.”
Susan also discusses the moves she made after retiring from her stage career that propelled her to become a pioneering leader in the ballet world. You’ll also hear why she’s excited about the ballet company’s future, her approach to making dance more inclusive, and how experience has taught her how to manage challenges with love, joy, and grace.
This isn’t just a dance story—it’s a true story about grit, vision, and redefining the art of leadership.
Don’t miss Susan’s inspirational story, available on all podcast platforms.
